Late Night Mayhem as Conan O'Brien (and Everyone Else) Turns on NBC: All the Clips You Missed
Conan O'Brien took to the airwaves tonight on the day he announced he'll leave NBC if he has to follow Jay Leno with another NBC/Leno-bashing broadcast. David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson joined in, while Leno stayed mostly quiet.
All the noteworthy clips from tonight—believe me, this is ALL of them—are grouped below by show and labeled accordingly.
Onto the videos!
I. THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN
12:00 AM ET: O'Brien's monologue, which aired just moments ago, included several jokes at the expense of NBC and Leno.
Shortly thereafter, O'Brien played a video with “statements” about the controversy—courtesy Muammar al-Gaddafi, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Fidel Castro—before inviting friend Howie Mandel on stage for a makeshift game of Deal Or No Deal, with the briefcases representing O'Brien's opportunities for the future. The briefcase O'Brien ended up with left little to the imagination about his feelings for Leno.
12:25 AM ET: After O'Brien's monologue, he invited Tonight Show writer Deon Cole on stage to explain the situation with NBC from a different perspective. Cole likened NBC to a “pimp” and O'Brien, Leno, Jimmy Fallon and Carson Daly to “hos.”
Later, O'Brien had veteran NBC anchor Tom Brokaw on for an interview. Brokaw took a couple of minutes at the beginning of the interview to discuss the NBC situation with O'Brien, both seriously and comically.
II. JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!
1:00 AM ET: Jimmy Kimmel opened his live show tonight as Leno and performed a full monologue in the former (and future?) Tonight Show host's style. Complete with a grey wig and prosthetic chin—even a makeshift Kevin Eubanks in band leader Cleto Escobedo—Kimmel decimated Leno with every passing second. Here's a few minutes of the hilarious—and hilariously biting—monologue.
1:45 AM ET: Later in the show, Kimmel did a mock Headlines segment (still as Leno) and then held an interview with Chevy Chase, who came out as Conan O'Brien, orange wig and all.
III. THE JAY LENO SHOW
10:20 PM ET: Just moments ago on his show, Leno mostly avoided speaking about all that has transpired in the past few days, offering only a few passing mentions of his show's cancellation—and no mention of O'Brien's shocking letter from this afternoon. A video of Leno's remarks is below.
10:30 PM ET: Sandra Bullock, Leno's first guest tonight, just poked fun at the host by asking him, “By the way, is this gonna be on the air tonight?”
Leno responded by jokingly calling Bullock “Smart Ass” and confirming that, yes, it would air. Video below.
10:55 PM ET: Finally some NBC-bashing from Leno's show, courtesy of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper (who was on for the 10@10 segment). Video below.
IV. THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON
1:10 AM ET:On The Late Late Show tonight, Craig Ferguson suggested a remake of The Late Shift—the 1996 movie about Leno and Letterman's fight for The Tonight Show—and offered his casting suggestions.
Later, Ferguson took another shot at NBC, calling the network “lying rat bastards.”
V. THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN
7:00 PM ET The Late Show has already posted an excerpt of Letterman's monologue to its YouTube channel, and it appears as though Letterman will go big with Jay “Big Jaw” Leno-bashing. On the heels of his advice for NBC from last night's show, Letterman suggests the network fill its 10:00 PM time slot with a new show called Law & Order: Leno Victims Unit. Watch below.
Fun fact: you may have noticed the quote “There is no off position on the genius switch” flash quickly at the end of the video and wondered about the significance of it. Well, it's a reference to Letterman's disastrous interview with Joaquin Phoenix last February. The more you know! Edit: Looks like we were mistaken. A couple of commenters have mentioned that Letterman has been using the aforementioned phrase for a while now as a cap to his Internet videos, among other things. Apologies!
7:45 PM ET: The Late Show's YouTube channel just posted another excerpt from tonight's show, in which Letterman analyzes the NBC late night catastrophe.
After issuing an anecdotal recap of things as they were and as as they are now, Letterman asserts that—surprise—it's all about money (fast forward to about 3:15 in for the hard analysis).
Here's part of Letterman's statement: “Here's the deal. Anytime there's a big stink like this, and—believe me—there hasn't been a big stink like this in years, it's money. Don't kid yourselves, it's all about money. And as nice a guy as Conan is, he's a smart fellow, and he knows that if he takes a hike, he's gonna lose an enormous sum of money. So he just now says, 'Well, I'm not gonna follow Jay, you guys do something about it.'”
Letterman also continued his two-day tradition of making some hilariously harsh jokes about Carson Daly. Look for them at about 3:00 in and again at about 4:30 in.
8:10 PM ET:Maybe Letterman has resigned himself to the fact that all eyes will be glued on O'Brien and The Tonight Show at 11:35 tonight, because The Late Show has just released two more clips to YouTube. Here's another excerpt of Letterman's monologue, in which he talks about the then-breaking news that O'Brien would opt not to follow Leno on NBC. We've clipped out the relevant part, but the full video can be viewed by clicking here
And if you're interested, a second additional clip of Letterman's monologue—in which he barely mentions the mess at NBC—is also up on The Late Show's YouTube channel. Click here to view it.

The iPad was supposed to change the face of computing, to be a completely new form of digital experience. But what Steve Jobs showed us yesterday was in fact little more than a giant iPhone. A giant iPhone that doesn’t even make calls. Many were expecting cameras, kickstands and some crazy new form of text input. The iPad, though, is better defined by what isn’t there.
Flash
Many people will bemoan the lack of support for Adobe’s interactive software, Flash. It wasn’t mentioned, but eagle-eyed viewers would have seen the missing plugin icon on the New York Times site during yesterday’s demo, and given that Apple clearly hates Flash as both a non-open web “standard” and as a buggy, CPU-hungry piece of code, it’s unlikely it will ever be added, unless Apple decides it wants to cut the battery life down to two hours.
Who needs Flash, anyway? YouTube and Vimeo have both switched to H.264 for video streaming (in Chrome and Safari, at least — Firefox doesn’t support it), and the rest of the world of Flash is painful to use.
In fact, we think the lack of Flash in the iPad will be the thing that finally kills Flash itself. If the iPad is as popular as the iPhone and iPod Touch, Flash-capable browsers will eventually be in the minority.
OLED
One of the biggest rumors said that there would be two iPads, one with an OLED screen and one without. But as our own Apple-master Brian X Chen pointed out, an OLED panel of this size runs to around $400. Add in the rest of the hardware and even the top-end $830 model wouldn’t be making Apple much money.
OLED also has some dirty secrets. It may be more colorful, but it uses more power than an LED backlit screen when all the diodes are lit up (white on black text is where OLED energy savings shine). It is also rather dim in comparison, and making an e-reader that you can’t use outdoors would be a stupid move from Apple.
USB
The iPad is meant to be an easy-to-use appliance, not an all-purpose computer. A USB port would mean installing drivers for printers, scanners and anything else you might hook up. But there is a workaround: the dock connector. Apple has already announced a camera connection kit, a $30 pair of adapters which will let you either plug the camera in direct or plug in an SD card to pull off the photos.
The subtle message here is that it’s not a feature for the pros: the lack of a Compact Flash slot in that adapter says “amateur photographers only.”
Expect a lot more of these kinds of accessories, most likely combined with software. How long can it be before, say, EyeTV makes an iPad-compatible TV tuner?
GPS
Apple put a compass inside every iPad, so you’d think that there would be a GPS unit in there, too. The Wi-Fi-only models get nothing, just like the iPod Touch, but more surprising is that the 3G iPads come with Assisted GPS.
Assisted GPS can be one of two things, both of which which offload some work to internet servers and use cell-tower triangulation. The difference is that some AGPS units have real GPS too, and some don’t. We’ll know which the iPad has as soon as we get our hands on one.
Update: Several readers have pointed out that Apple uses the term A-GPS for the iPhone 3G, which makes it very likely that the GPS capability is of the proper, satellite-navigation kind. This “Assisted GPS” is “just GPS (the U.S. space-based global navigation satellite system) plus faster signal lock with assistance from cell towers.” (Thanks, Nathan!)
Multitasking
From the demonstrations at the Jobsnote it appears that, like the iPhone, we can’t run applications in the background. This will annoy many Wired readers, but it will not matter at all to the target user, who will be using the iPad to browse and consume media. In fact, this user will benefit, as the lack of CPU-cycle-sucking background processes is likely a large part of that ten-hour battery life.
If you are authoring content, like this post, then multiple browser windows, a text editor, a mail client and a photo editor all make sense. If you’re reading an e-book, not so much.
Keyboard
Nobody really thought the iPad would have a physical keyboard. That won’t stop the whining, though. The difference, again, between the iPad and a MacBook is that one is a multi-purpose device and the other is a media player.
The fact that Apple actually has made an optional keyboard for it is the biggest surprise (apart from the iPad’s base $500 price). In fact, this little $70 keyboard will mean that, despite its simplified nature, the iPad is enough laptop for many people. Why bother with a $400 netbook when you can have this instead?
Camera
No video camera, no stills camera, and no webcam. The first two will likely never make it into a future iPad, as we all have our iPhones or actual cameras with us, too. But the lack of a webcam is odd, as it closes off the possibility of using the iPad as a videophone.
I figure this is a cost-saving measure on Apple’s part. Too bad, though, as it is the only thing that stops me buying an iPad for my parents, whom I talk to on Skype. There seems to be no other reason not to have a webcam in the bezel other than price. We expect to see one in v2.0.
Verizon
iPhone users hate AT&T, but the only alternative is T-Mobile, whose coverage isn’t as good. Until Verizon switches to the world-standard GSM SIM card, don’t expect to see an Apple product on its network. You can forget all those Verizon iPhone rumors right now.
16:9
The iPad screen is a relatively square, by today’s standards, with an old-school 4:3 screen aspect ratio. This is not ideal for watching widescreen movies: you get a thick black “letterbox” bar top and bottom. But take another look at the hardware: the Apple on the back, and the position of the home button both tell us that the iPad is meant to be used in portrait mode, at least most of the time. And a 16:9 aspect ratio in this orientation would look oddly tall and skinny, like an electronic Marilyn Manson.
It’s a compromise, and a good one. If you really do spend most of your time watching movies on the iPad, maybe you should think about buying, you know, a big TV.
HDMI
There will be video out, likely through the dock connector, as Jobs said during his presentation that you’ll be able to hook the iPad up to a projector. But no HDMI out? How do you hook it up to your HD monitor?
The short answer is that you don’t. The maximum audience for an iPad screening is two. You want more? Use your laptop and hook that up, or your desktop machine. Remember, there are two kinds of people who will buy the iPad. One, nerds like you and me, who care about things like HDMI and also already own a computer that can do that.
And two, people who are buying this instead of a computer. Those people will probably still have DVD collections, or even VCRs. They don’t even know what HDMI is. I think I can guess what Apple thought about putting another expensive connector into the machine just to please a few geeks.

A new study released by a German consumer advocacy group is estimating that entertainment and software companies sent roughly 450,000 cease-and-desist letters to local file sharers alone in 2010 2009, yielding some $370 million in damages. That’s a steep jump from 2008, when the group tracked closer to 250,000 of such cases.
It’s hard to independently verify these figures, but experts agree that the number of individuals affected by P2P lawsuits is likely in the hundreds of thousands. Add to it the fact that similar campaigns are also waged in countries like the UK, and suddenly piracy is starting to look less like a threat and more like a not very kosher way to make money.
The German non-profit organization Verein zur Hilfe und Unterstützung gegen den Abmahnwahn e.V., which (very) loosely translated means The Association Against Cease and Desist Madness, released a detailed study this week based on multiyear investigations of anti-P2P lawsuits. Germany has in recent years become an intense battleground for file sharers and content owners, with companies like Digitprotect GmbH scouring P2P networks to find users that are offering files for download. Armed with this evidence, they’re using legal means to force ISPs to reveal the identify of such users, to whom they subsequently send cease-and-desist notices complete with an order to pay as much as 1,300 euros (around $1,900.) Users unwilling to pay are threatened with even more costly lawsuits.
The study concludes that Digiptotect and similar companies were acting upon the request of 159 rights holders in 2009. Most lawsuit threats were related to music sharing, but 10.8 percent had to do with Hollywood or German movies, and another 15.2 percent with pornographic videos. The group is basing these numbers on around 2,700 cases it was able to analyze in detail based on data provided by the alleged offenders. It also scoured various web forums to collect data, and estimated the total number of cases based on publicly available data and previous estimates.
Granted, that doesn’t sound very scientific, but experts view 450,000 cases as a realistic ballpark figure, as the German IT news site Netzwelt.de is reporting. The site is quoting a lawyer named Alexander Wachs who’s been defending accused file sharers as saying that rights holders have started to send multiple demands to file sharers who happened to share more than one movie. However, Wachs believes that the total amount of damages paid may be lower since not everyone ends up paying. Still, P2P users may have paid close to $190 million to rights holders in 2009, according to his own estimates.
That’s a whole lot of money, and it explains why companies like Digiprotect are advertising their business with promises to “turn piracy into profit.” In fact, a Digiprotect competitor recently made headlines trying to convince rights holders that they could make 150 times as much money by hunting down a file sharer as they would if the same user would buy a legitimate digital download.

There is an equal amount of corruption right here in our own governement, @Shamrock. The only difference is, they sweep it under the rug and do great public service things to clean up the money and their image. Think about the Kennedy family. Famous in politics, philanthropy and all that. But guess what? Oldman Joe Kennedy was a gangsta that ran illegal moonshine, etc. etc. However, THEY know how to clean stuff up well.
Obiang is a dictator with access to BILLIONS of dollars in oil money. Of course they’re corrupt….and he’s been President for like 30 years there. Eve was cashing in with Junior, but Junior got real dirty money, and they gonna squeeze her hard to get to him. I hope it was worth it for her.

I sympathize with EVE. I was engaged to a Nigerian guy who is facing federal charges for identity theft and so many of you are right, most African can’t be trusted, are out for self and will let you take the fall for/with them. Their families condone whatever bs they get involved in if they can profit from it. You begin to feel like corruption is a genetic thing. Even their mothers lie to protect them! I think its unfair for you to label africans as people “that should not be trusted”. There are 53 countries in africa with over a billion people in the continent and even more in diaspora, so for u to say all of us are not to be trusted doesnt make much sense. There are def some bad leaders that portray us negatively but that can be said about leaders anywhere in the world, so please refrain from such accusations as it affects my reputation as an African. - posted by TootinSTL

The following is a guest post written by Daniel Castro, Senior Analyst, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation
Would the U.S. government turn a blind eye to the theft of hundreds of thousands of GM vehicles each year? Of course not. Yet, large-scale theft occurs every day on the Internet from U.S. companies with little recourse. And the end result is still the same–lost sales translate into lost jobs.
In early 2000, increasingly fast Internet connections and cheap storage led to a rapid growth of digital piracy–the theft of music, movies, TV programs, software, video games, books, photos and periodicals. A decade later, Internet users around the world still download pirated content at an alarming rate. Much of this stolen content originates from the United States and digital pirates are expanding into new areas such as illegally streaming live programming like sports events. The government has done relatively little to stop this, which in turn is hurting American businesses and workers alike.
Some people see Internet piracy as nothing more than a digital version of Robin Hood–stealing from the rich to give to the poor. While this “David versus Goliath” style populism is trendy–even one British priest has blessed shoplifting as long as it is from big corporations–the reality is that piracy harms the artists, both the famous and struggling, who create content. Technicians are also hurt in the process–sound engineers, editors, set designers, software and game programmers–who produce it. Moreover, many of the countries engaging most frequently in digital piracy can afford to pay. For example, China tops the lists for both countries engaging in digital piracy and countries with which the U.S. has the largest trade deficit. (China is also one of the top sources of counterfeit items like toothpaste and sneakers, further evidence of its low standards for protecting intellectual property.)
Apologists for digital piracy often make the case that there is a difference between theft in the physical world and theft in the digital world. If a shoplifter steals one Blu-ray disc from Best Buy, the store has one fewer movie to sell. If a digital pirate illegally downloads a movie, no retailer or consumers supposedly suffers. However, when illegal downloads cut into actual sales (which they do), both the producers of the content and consumers are hurt, the producers through lower profits and the consumers through higher prices.
To this argument, it has become a common defense for those engaging in digital piracy to make claims like, “I only download music I wouldn't buy” or “I end up buying the movies I like.” First, this may be true in some cases, but not all. Second, the desire to “try before you buy” does not give consumers the right to steal content anymore than it gives them the right to steal a car for a test drive. Third, businesses are listening, and there are now increasing numbers of ways to access content online legally without having to purchase it. For example, “free” music can be found on legal services like Lala, Pandora and Spotify to the YouTube channels of major record labels. The reasons to support piracy have dwindled.
Some might ask, if piracy is such a problem, why has Avatar, James Cameron's new blockbuster movie set record worldwide sales? In part, it is because the film's 3D special effects make the theatrical experience better than watching a pirated copy on a home PC. But the film has also set worldwide records for illegal downloads–in seven days, almost a million copies of the movie were downloaded illegally (compared to 610,000 downloads for New Moon). More importantly, films like Avatar, which may have cost as much as half a billion dollars to produce, will not be made if studios cannot recoup their investments from legitimate sales.
Interestingly, physical piracy, selling counterfeit products such as knock-offs of designer clothing or fake pharmaceuticals, is usually taken more seriously. For example, in pre-Christmas raids across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents seized over $26 million in counterfeit goods. Efforts at reducing piracy of physical goods are becoming more common, in part because of claims that terror organizations are funding their efforts through selling counterfeit goods. As one expert describes it, “If you sell drugs, you go to jail. If you sell counterfeit products, the penalties aren't as stiff, so terrorists see this as an easy way to make money.”
Lackluster enforcement of digital piracy has allowed it to grow unchecked and become a big business online. Digital piracy has quickly devolved from a “free music” cultural movement into a competitive business, often pitting enterprising criminals abroad against legitimate U.S. businesses. Piracy is no longer the domain of just a few college students trading files with their friends–it is a multi-million dollar industry operating on a global scale. And it is dependent on the same revenue streams as legitimate businesses–online advertising for “free” content or direct sales for access to pirated content. Stopping piracy will involve not only technical measures to make piracy more difficult, it will also involve legislative and industry efforts to cut off these revenue streams, such as by getting search engines to block piracy websites and getting businesses to stop advertising on these sites. (A recent review found major brands such as Amazon.com, Blockbuster, British Airways, and Sprint advertising on piracy websites.).
A common complaint among those opposed to the economic shifts seen in the United States over the past few decades is that “we don't make anything anymore.” Yet some of the products the U.S. makes best–movies, music, software, games and books–are stolen not just by Americans, but increasingly by foreign consumers. Yes, stopping piracy will be good for big corporations. But it will also be good for the American economy and American workers. So if Congress is looking for new ways of creating jobs in 2010, here's an easy one: work to stop piracy.
Are you looking for ways to work from home with no investments? Let me show you a very effective way of how you can use the power of the Internet to start your own profitable online business with little or no investment at all. There may have been several instances where you have been through different work at home opportunities that really sound promising, and many of them are. The only problem is, most of them require a sizable investment, which you may not have.
Some of them will have huge one-time fees and monthly membership fees but in our today’s economy, it’s difficult for most people to come up with some extra money. Important thing is not to get frustrated in looking for work at home opportunities because it’s not really that hard.
Beware of Scam Artists!
I like to think that I’ve never been scammed before although I bought some guides that were not geared towards beginners. I had a hard time understanding the methods and as a result I was off to buy another course. I also tried signing up for a membership site ($45 one-time fee) that offers online jobs like data entry and advertisement writing, but the information they had inside was really out of date.
In order to avoid scams and impulsively buying guides, you should educate yourself with the basics of how Internet marketing really works. I don’t really like data entry jobs because I find it really boring and repetitive. I don’t even know if you can build a real business from it even if I see many ads claiming you can earn thousands per week from data entry alone.
Work From Home With No Investments By Promoting Products
The truth is that there are only few opportunities online to work from home with no investments. The good news is that there are many ways that you can make money from home that are really easy, and anyone can follow.
One of the most effective ways of making money online is to promote products of other people and this is known as affiliate marketing. Everyday there are millions of people surfing the web who are ready to buy products that will solve their problems. Your job is to simply get in front of these people using tried and tested marketing methods.
2 Basic Marketing Methods
There are basically two methods (FREE and PAID) that you can use to drive traffic:
Article Marketing – This is one of the most effective ways of driving free traffic to your website. The idea is to write articles that relates to your products and have your articles appear in search engine listing for your keywords. Your articles will then funnel those readers back to your website because there will be a link in your resource box at the end of your article. When a reader decides to click your special link in your website and buys from the merchant, you will get a commission which typically ranges from 50%-75% of the product price.
That’s basically the process and if you want a more detailed explanation on article marketing, then you can just download my free article marketing guide. You don’t necessarily need to have your own website to start but I like to build my own websites.
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) – This is the most common form of paid advertising. These are the sponsored links on the side that you see when you search a certain keyword in search engines. Advertisers only pay when someone clicks on their ads. The cost for each click will depend on how much advertisers are bidding for a keyword.
My Recommendations
You can work from home with no investments but most of the information about making money online is totally misleading. You can also waste a lot of your time searching and jumping from one course to another trying to find what actually works.
If you need a complete Internet marketing training program, then I highly suggest that you check out the Wealthy Affiliate University. But if you don’t have the budget for their monthly fee, then the 4 Day Money Making Blueprint is the next best thing that you could get.

KATHMANDU, Dec 12: The government clampdown on nightlife might have helped control crime in the cities. But the shutting down of night businesses has also forced many to look for greener pastures abroad. Bar girls are among the ones to make it really big in their profession.
President of Nepal Night Industry Entrepreneurs Association (NNIEA) Samir Gurung says that ever since the clampdown last year, a large number of bar girls have been picked by Indian agents and Nepali sub-agents to work in dance bars in China, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa, where the girls can earn up to 10 times of what they earned here.
The stint abroad is not just financially rewarding for the girls, but also adds value to their resume. For some, a stint abroad is so rewarding that they can afford to refuse another such offer.
Take for instance, a girl, who works at a dance bar in Old Baneshwar. Reena is the name the girl recently coined for herself. “Reena is my name in this bar. I have many names,” said the girl. Reena ended up in the bar as its highest paid dancer three months ago after a two-year stint abroad.
She danced in Beijing, Dubai and Singapore. The foreign jobs boosted her financial status to such an extent that should there be any offer to fly again, she says she would refuse it outright.
“Today, I earn as much here,” the 29-year-old from Narayanghat told Republica during a repeatedly interrupted interview at a congested underground cell used by the bar as the staff kitchen.
The bar management could not let her dabble elsewhere when regular and lucrative costumers demand the “best collector” on stage or seek to cuddle with them.
Career´s high point
For Nepali bar girls, getting an opportunity to work abroad is their career´s most successful and rewarding moment. Eight Nepali bar girls landed in Singapore last week. One of them was working at a dance bar in Baneshwor and decided not to miss the chance though she actually wanted to meet her daughter who is now living with her parents in Dharan.
“Going abroad is the first choice among dance girls,” said the proprietor of the bar, requesting anonymity.
Dance bars in foreign countries have set up a competitive channel to procure bar girls from Nepal, though it is an illegal arrangement.
Nepal government does not permit dance girls to leave for overseas jobs. Legalizing this category of overseas employment seems a far call when the government has even cut permission for domestic helps short.
“There is no provision to permit dance girls for overseas jobs,” said Director General of Foreign Employment Department (FED) Mohan Krishna Sapkota.
An estimated half of the Nepali workers are said to have been going overseas through illegal channels. Dance girls comprises a significant chunk of such workers.
According to bar proprietors, Nepali dance girls fly to their destinations from India, where most of their agents are based, to seemingly avert legal hurdles at home. They are taken there on tourist visas.
NINEA President Gurung says his organization can furnish a long list of agents representing dance bars in foreign countries if the government asks for it.
According to Gurung, owners of dance bars in foreign countries sometimes come to Nepal themselves to look for dance girls while there are scores of Indian agents and their Nepali sub-agents based in Kathmandu. The dance girls, who worked abroad, also seem to have been brokering for the trade after they return and rejoin the local bars.
Bar girls go abroad in groups
Reena went to Beijing with six girls and five boys. Her employers there, a Chinese couple of one ´Cool Bar´ in central Beijing, themselves came to Nepal to employ them for a six-month stint. But they did not complete their term owing to adverse climate.
Last March, Reena went to Dubai with two others and found 31 Nepali girls in three branches of ´Dhadkan Dance Bar´ that she worked for.
After two months´ stint there, she returned Nepal and immediately made way for Singapore, where a bar named ´Khajana´ with already 25 Nepali girls was ready to welcome her.
The trend reached a high particularly after the government enforced a 12 pm deadline one-and-a-half year ago, says Gurung.
“The bars still suffer badly. The foreign agents took advantage of our hard times. Employees embraced the opportunity instead of giving up on the business,” he added.
Bar owners in Nepal claim that they can stop the illegal detour of Nepali dance girls by ensuring better benefits, given proper regulations and promotion.
Experienced dance girls in Nepal are now found to get a salary of up to Rs 15,000 plus a regular tip of Rs 500 every day.
The average salary of Nepali dance girls overseas seems to be between Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000. “In Singapore, bar girls can earn as much as 80, 000,” says Reena.
Nepali girls at the receiving end
“They accept the offers blindly. With no legal status, they will be helpless if they happen to face any problem,” said NINEA President Gurung. “We hear that there are a good many hidden cases in which Nepali dance girls are victimized.”
He argued that this part of foreign employment should also be brought under the Labor Act. FED has no reported complaint about the Nepali dance girls working abroad. However, Reena reveals her experience in Dubai that dance girls should meet a “collection target” set by the owners and thus might also have to be “closer” to the clients. “Dubai is only for ´Tatha Batha´ (clever ones),” she added.
According to NNIEA, there are 200 dance bars in Kathmandu, each employing 15-20 girls on an average. “We think that only around 5 percent of them have completed school education,” Gurung says. “Lack of education is the main reason behind this trend.”

Chapter Twelve
Monroe came up with what he thought was a reasonable list of upgrades for the new model house. It wouldn’t take Rafael’s guys more than a day or two - kitchen faucets, cover plates for the light switches, bathroom vanities, light fixtures. He’d have them put up curtains rather than mini-blinds, maybe hang a chandelier in the front hall.
Darren called at 4:30. “Hey Monroe. Wanda said something about downloading photos. Is that what these memory cards are?”
“Yes,” Monroe said. “Make two copies, one for me, one for Donny. Also, what are you doing tomorrow?”
There was a pause as Darren reviewed his possible answers, then “Nothing really important. You want me do something else?”
“Can you come out to Eagle Trace? We’ve got to go through and document all the repairs that need to be done.”
Darren’s helpfulness had evaporated by noon on Tuesday. Monroe sent him back to the office and told him to go through the photos from Sunday and see if he recognized anyone. Monroe knew it was a long shot, but Darren had been with the company for ten years. Whoever posted the notice on Craigslist might have come to watch. If it was someone that had once worked for the company, Darren would probably recognize them.
Trying to document the repairs by himself was too slow so he told Martha to come out and bring Juan with her to help. It made more sense for Martha to do it anyway – since she was an architect, she could sign whatever they needed to submit for an insurance claim. Monroe assumed this would all be covered by insurance, whatever the deductible was, this had to be way more.
“I’m really sorry about the power being out,” Martha said as she followed Juan into the house. “It should be all squared away now.”
Monroe blanked for a minute, then realized she was talking about the office power. He had completely forgotten about it. “Terrific,” he said. “Thanks for taking care of it. And I’ll talk to Donny about Sanjay when we get things under control here.” Martha nodded. She had enough sense to realize that personnel problems were not a priority with anyone at the moment.
Rafael had his guys pull all the appliances out of the garage and he and Monroe went over them, noting every scratch and dent. If they were going to file an insurance claim, Monroe figured they might as well include everything they could. Even if nobody would ever see things like the scratches on the top of the refrigerator, which if he had to be honest, could have happened when they were installing the refrigerator in the first place.
The insurance adjuster came out with Richard in the afternoon. The adjuster, a young guy Monroe hadn’t seen before, picked his way carefully around the broken glass and said that what they were doing would be fine for documentation. Richard had talked with Cheryl and the Open House with punch and cake had turned into a barbecue with a ragtime band. Great idea, Monroe thought when Cheryl told him about it, she could work on finding a band; it would keep her out of the way.
Monroe was reading through Martha’s notes on Friday morning when his phone rang.
“Hi Monroe,” Gina said. “I’ve got a sales rep lined up for the Open House at the bungalow. Can you meet her there this afternoon and show it to her?”
Shit, thought Monroe, I never talked to Terry. If she has plans for the weekend I could be screwed. He looked at his watch – it was almost 11:00. “Okay,” he said. “Why don’t we meet there at 2:30. It wouldn’t take more than half an hour, we’ll be out before the traffic gets bad.”
“Fine,” Gina said. “Her name’s Charlene Watson. I’ll give her the proof of the flyer for the house. Let me know if you want any changes.”
He buzzed Terry. “Terry, this is Monroe. Could you come here for a minute?”
Terry showed up with a legal pad, ready to take notes. That wouldn’t be necessary, Monroe thought, I’m not giving you a research assignment.
“Do you have any plans for this Sunday?” he asked.
“Not really,” Terry said, a little uncertainly.
“Well, I have a favor to ask,” Monroe said, hoping she wouldn’t suddenly remember she’d been invited to a pool party. “We’re having an Open House at a property off of North Capitol. There’ll be a realtor there part of the time, but we need to have someone there from noon until 4:00. We’re a little short of people right now, because of Eagle Trace. Would you be interested? You’d be paid double time of course, since it’s Sunday.”
Terry seemed even more uncertain. “But I’m not a realtor or anything.”
“That’s not a problem,” Monroe said expansively. “Since we own the house, it’s kind of a sell- by-owner thing. We just have the realtor to do the marketing.”
“Well, will someone tell me what to do?” Terry asked, an unpleasant whine to her voice.
“Sure, do you have your car here?”
“No, I took Metro this morning.”
“Okay, tell you what, I’ll have Juan drive you up there this afternoon. He knows where it is. Why don’t you plan to be up there around 1:30? We can go through the house and you can meet the realtor.”
When Terry had left, Monroe shuffled through the papers on his desk, to make sure there was nothing else he had forgotten. All he found was a note he had written to himself about taking Jan’s car in for servicing because the air conditioning wasn’t working right. They were going to the Outer Banks the last week of July and he didn’t want to have the air conditioning quit completely the day before they were leaving.

LinkedIn has evolved into the largest online business networking platform – totaling 32 million users worldwide. Prior to the social networking craze, LinkedIn was largely used to connect with past co-workers and trusted colleagues. Now, however, LinkedIn has extended its capabilities to serve as a brand building platform for professionals looking to network, engage, and communicate with like-minded peers. The surge was accelerated during the recessionary period when laid off workers were looking to locate jobs and hopefully connect with others who could assist in the process.
Today, LinkedIn continues to grow by adding key features that are essential to not just networking but building a community to share information, discuss and debate, and promote personal and business brand as well as network. However, harnessing the true power of LinkedIn not just to network with your “trusted” and “known” community of friends and colleagues but promoting your brand and thought leadership through LinkedIn.
To gain insight into the use of LinkedIn, build SEO for your profile and blog, as well as launching engaging and meaningful conversations, I spoke with my good friend and colleague Chris Hewitt. He’s not only my trusted friend but someone who truly understands the power of the platform.
In this blog Q&A, I looked at several components – how do you use LinkedIn to build personal brand and network, what are some innovative ways to use LinkedIn to build awareness and some tips and tricks to maximize using LinkedIn. Please read below.
Why is LinkedIn so important for professionals today in building network and personal brand?
Our professional success is largely determined by the recognition of that effort by our colleagues and peers. Similarly, the growth of our career is supported by the generosity and investment of other professionals. As a result, we need to nurture those relationships and reciprocate in the growth and development of others.
I believe that it is critical for professionals to be present, be heard, be engaged, and be connected in order to build and sustain success. The Internet, and advent of Web-based tools, has provided us with a powerful tool in being all those things…often in real-time.
Currently, LinkedIn is the most popular professional, Web-based social networking tool and, as a result, important. I think it is important, though, that we are not complacent…another tool might be a better solution; either now (e.g. chi.mp or posterous.com) or in the future.
One important note about companies. I think LinkedIn has done an excellent job in providing professionals with ability to build an individual brand while also personalizing an organization through the organic enrichment of ‘company’ profiles. While many marketing/communications people actively monitor/manage their company profiles, any validated user (based on email domain) can contribute to that profile…a great tool for showcasing a supportive, engaged corporate culture.
What are some innovative ways to use LinkedIn to build personal brand, promote events, and create awareness?
First and foremost, I believe we need to ground our expectations in a type of altruistic philosophy. We should look at LinkedIn as a tool we can leverage to return real value by sharing our unique value proposition with other professionals (and aspiring professionals). With this concept driving our actions, we are better positioned to reach our career/business/networking objectives while positively contributing to the larger community.
LinkedIn, itself, has a variety of tools that can be leveraged to create individual and organizational awareness.
Certainly the ‘answers’ feature is a great way to share your knowledge with the community. Additionally, where relevant, you can highlight the strengthen and solutions your company provides.
However, in the last year or so, I have seen a troubling (and dramatic) increase in self-serving dialogue through LinkedIn Answers. Users are clearly posting questions to draw attention to their message, company, etc and other users are answering to feed their ’social competitiveness’ (my idea that a lot of our social networking is driven by our innate desire for higher social status).
So, to me, the innovative is not in the tools but leveraging those tools into concepts. For example, use LinkedIn as a platform for showcasing your evolving professional concepts and keep your content fresh. For example, let’s say you had a new marketing concept that you are excited about; one that really showcases your experience/creativity/innovation. You could use LinkedIn as a platform to create a personal marketing campaign and share your thoughts:
- Write a blog post and attach it to your profile.
- Create a mini-series of LinkedIn status message that change on a scheduled basis.
- Relevantly update your experience to showcase how you used (or could have used) this concept.
- Create a presentation in Google (upload to Slideshare) and post on your profile.
- Develop some type of ‘take away’ material that viewers of your profile can download (Box.net).
You could also create polls and questions (where relevant and valued-added) to drive your message. The key to this concept is that you regularly (I know…easier typed than done) change out your LinkedIn ‘conceptual campaigns’. Changing out these concepts once a month would be a powerful statement of your personal brand (not to mention your ability to execute).
SEO is very important today. What are some tips and tricks to make your LinkedIn profile more SEO friendly?
Your LinkedIn profile is likely not going to carry enough search engine equity to compete against other websites for general keyword concepts (e.g. ‘real estate professional’, ‘Experienced MSCE’, etc.). So, you should rather focus your energy on personal characteristics combined with key concepts, skills, or experience. For example, if you regularly speak on a particular topic and any special phrases (e.g. ‘Your Ness’ as seen in ‘You, Me, and Dupree’). Also, if you have a branded product, service, or concept you should include the relevant text in your tagline, summary, specialties, and experience.
In order to generate greater search engine visibility for your LinkedIn profile, focus on ‘inbound links’ (links to your profile from other websites). If you want to use your LinkedIn profile as your main online presence (versus a website, blog, etc.), take every opportunity to link to your ‘public profile URL’. Some examples of linking opportunities are:
- Part of your posted biography (events, speaking engagements, etc.)
- Press releases
- Social networking websites (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
- Attached to your comments on blogs, articles, etc.
Lastly, and in my opinion most importantly, is what actions you want visitors to take after finding your profile. Focus on engaging visitors (especially search-generated visitors) to your profile and driving them to a particular action.
Examples:
Job Seeker (visibility/candidacy)
- Change your status to reflect a concept relevant to the organization you are seeking an interview or position (e.g. industry article, thought, etc.).
- Create a relevant blog post that details a unique, differentiating strength/idea that would be too long for an interview or resume.
- Post a copy of your resume or other supporting document (via LinkedIn Applications) that could be downloaded (note: make sure that document prominently displays your contact information)
Product/Solution Provider (awareness)
- Customize your website link, use action-oriented hyperlink text and drive them to your website.
- Post relevant documents using LinkedIn Applications.
- Tie in relevant blog posts and links to your website.
Why should marketers today care about LinkedIn?
The LinkedIn community organically generates high quality and well-qualified audiences that we, as marketers, would love to reach with our messages. Additionally, there are enough explicit and implicit profiling attributes to segment various audiences (e.g. industry, company size, region, skills, etc.). As a result, LinkedIn presents the opportunity to engage highly targeted audiences.
While we wipe the dollar signs from our eyes, we have to be thoughtful in our approach to these LinkedIn audiences. Our tendency is to ‘blast’ the rich LinkedIn community with our concept/message/offer. However, we need to focus on content and actions that authentically create dialogue. Share our knowledge and resources and allow opportunities to grow naturally from that dialog.
With the sophisticated SPAM filtering built into today’s email systems and software, I believe social media SPAM is going to be the next digit intrusion; just look at the number of multi-level marketers on Twitter generating empty content (and all following one another).
Key steps to getting started:
My advice is to build and grow your presence under the guidance of a personal brand strategy:
- Who are you?
- What have you accomplished?
- Where are you going?
- What’s your unique brand position?
Don’t start by building another resume…create a dynamic, engaging presence. Your experience should be coupled to concepts not tasks, duties, and responsibilities. In developing your personal brand strategy, ask others to help define your unique characteristics and provide guidance for your message.
While it may be tempting, don’t count connections…build meaningful connections within your network. You will want to be able to make connections to people within your network.
My personal connection philosophy:
If you can’t happily and meaningfully introduce a person at a cocktail party or networking event, they should not be a connection.
Also be authentic with your connections. Did you work with someone previously but had issues with their work/performance/approach? Do not connect with them…your personal brand equity is also tied to the people you trust to be within your network.
One special consideration for job seekers…always preserve your brand, even when the search isn’t going well. It is far too easy to type, post, and hurt what you have been building. Your profile is a statement of your personal brand and needs to be carefully protected.
Should you promote your personal blog versus company website?
Your profile allows for the use of multiple links; use them to identify what it is your linking to and why:
- Use your profile to promote yourself, your skills, and accomplishments.
- User the descriptive sections of experience to highlight relevant experience as well as company objectives (e.g. 100 word company description).
- Use a company profile to promote your brand, messaging, and positioning.
- Encourage the members of the company to enrich the profile.
How should you integrate other social networking sites to LinkedIn and why?
Yes…however, where it is relevant (okay, you may now move the needle from my broken record of ‘relevance’) and where it is targeted. The inclusive of Blogs and applications like Slideshare/Box.net/Google Docs is a great way to tie together various concepts to form a better picture of your professional profile. Similarly, you can post your LinkedIn profile/badge across your other social networking properties to engage visitors. For example, use your LinkedIn profile as your biography and focus your energy on maintaining that content (versus managing multiple biographies).
Lastly, don’t feel that you have to create a hyper socially networked profile that will be the envy of all your Twitter followers. Be authentic. If you are an active member and/or passionate about a group, display it on your profile. If you like to socialize your reading list through LinkedIn, awesome. The main point is not to make your LinkedIn profile a dizzying blur of social media NASCAR badging.
To leave with a quote from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby ’This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.’
Reposted from The Marketing Journalist by Cindy Kim
I have a magazine that I'm in charge of marketing that covers bird watching and gardening. It is the category leader and its site gets around 120K UV's a month. Since the readers/visitors spend so much time outdoors, weather is a big area of interest. My thought is to develop a content partnership with a weather website. the magazine's weather related content would live in a home and garden section of the weather partner's site. There would be a link back to the magazine's site. What's in it for the weather partner is an opportunity to sell the space and not have to develop content. We might create a special weather section on our site.
The push back I will get here is SEO ranking for the magazine's web site since the editors would be providing repurposed content that could also be found on their site. If the seach engines find similar content, doesn't it just become a jump ball and decided on who has the most links, that would be us at this point?
Would appreciate input on how to move this project forward.
Here are some pathauto settings to watch out for:
For update action choose “Do nothing. Leave the old alias intact.” Otherwise the URLs of nodes will change every time you change the title of your post, causing problems with search engines:
There is also a more comprehensive Pathauto tutorial.
Install the Global Redirect Module
The Global Redirect Module will automatically do 301 redirects to your URL aliases. So if you have a node a example.com/node/5, the Global Redirect Module will redirect that URL to your alias at example.com/my-page.
Read more about the Global Redirect Module.
Install the Meta Tags (Nodewords) Module
The Meta Tags Module (formerly called “Nodewords Module”) can be highly beneficial to your site. There is a myth in some search engine optimization circles that says, "meta tags are not important". This is not true.
Meta tags are not meant to be used for keyword stuffing. Don't use them for that purpose because it isn't going to help you. The really important meta tag is the meta description.
The meta description should be different on every page for best results. The meta description should be one or two brief sentences to summarize the page. It should be written for your human visitors, but it is not a bad idea to tastefully and sparingly insert a couple of your keywords. Often when a search engine lists your site in the search engine results pages, it will use your page's HTML title for the title, and your meta description for the text snippet. That is why the meta description should be written with human visitors in mind. You want a text snippet that is going to make them want to click on the link.
Here is one textbook example from this site in the Google SERPs with the meta description highlighted in red:
I generally configure the Drupal Nodewords module to output the meta description and meta keywords on every page. I have a few default keywords set, and add a couple more on every post to make a unique combination of relevant keywords. I don't spend much time with it because I don't think the meta keywords are that important.
On the nodewords module's administration page, be sure to check the box that says “Use the teaser of the page if the meta description is not set?”. That way each page will get a unique meta description even if you have denied access to create custom meta tags for nodes to some users.
Install the Page Title Module
The Page Title Module allows you to set custom page titles on every page. Highly recommended.
Google Sitemaps Module
Google Sitemaps are not essential, but I've been adding them to my Drupal sites. I think that Google Sitemaps were created by Google primarily for debugging Googlebot and not for the benefit of search engine optimizers.
There is a Drupal Sitemap Module, but the last time I checked it had serious bugs that made it unusable. In any case, I don't think that most Web sites need XML sitemaps. Other SEOs have similar opinions about sitemaps.
I recommend not using the Drupal Sitemaps Module. [See the comments on this article for a longer discussion about XML sitemaps and Drupal.]
Drupal Rewrite Rules
Make sure that your site does a permanent (301) redirect in either of the following two ways:
- http://example.com to http://www.example.com, or
- http://www.example.com to http://example.com
You can setup this redirect in your .htaccess file.
To remove the www from your site, look for the following code in your .htaccess file and uncomment and adapt:
# To redirect all users to access the site WITHOUT the 'www.' prefix,
# (http://www.example.com/... will be redirected to http://example.com/...)
# uncomment and adapt the following:
# RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.example\.com$
# RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1
To redirect to the www version of the site, look for the following code and uncomment and adapt:
# To redirect all users to access the site WITH the 'www.' prefix,
# (http://example.com/... will be redirected to http://www.example.com/...)
# adapt and uncomment the following:
# RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$
# RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1
Be sure to replace example.com with your domain name, and then test the redirects in a browser.
Fix Your HTML Headers
There should be one <h1> header element on every page and it should have your keywords in it.
- Enclose your site name in DIV tags, not HTML header tags.
- I would add one H1 element to the home page.
- On teaser views, the node titles should be enclosed in H2 tags, while the main header of the page (e.g., taxonomy term name) should be enclosed in H1 tags.
- On node view pages, the node title should be enclosed in H1 tags.
Duplicate Content from /node
By default, the front page of a Drupal site has nearly identical content to the page at /node. Search engines are going to spider and index /node because on the paginated home page view, the link to the first page in the series points at /node.
The fix for this is simple — always use a custom front page when building a Drupal site.
Drupal PHP Session IDs
I haven't seen this problem on Drupal sites in a long time, but if you see PHP session IDs in your URLs, it is very bad for search engines. They have to be removed if you want search engines to be able to spider your site well. A PHP session ID in your URL might look something like this: ?PHPSESSID=37765439acbd6c12345ee987776e65be.
From what I understand, this is the fix if your server supports mod_php — it goes in your .htaccess file:
# Fix PHP session ID problems in Drupal
php_value session.use_trans_sid 0
php_value session.use_only_cookies 1
Otherwise you can probably fix it my modifying your php.ini file (or creating one). I don't know the exact procedure for every host, only that your web site must not have PHP session IDs in the URLs if you want good spidering by search engines. Search Drupal.org or Google for how to turn off PHP session IDs on your server.
Drupal and Robots.txt
The default Drupal robots.txt file has critical errors in it even in Drupal 6.2 (bug report already filed).
Read this Drupal robots.txt tutorial for more information.
Watch out for contributed modules that create duplicate content through extra URLs. This can be a serious problem.

With so much talk of search engines, many people in the SEO world lose sight of the ultimate goal of search engine optimisation. This is, of course, getting customers through your door and making your business money. Particularly if your site is for e-commerce, increased traffic is no use to your business if you can’t turn it into profit.
A lot of businesses get into trouble when approaching SEO companies because the focus is on traffic. It’s one of the classic black-hat scenarios. An innocent website can get taken for a ride because their SEO firm focused solely on traffic while trashing their perfectly good e-commerce platform. Organic SEO requires a holistic approach that many disreputable companies skimp on.
It is even more important for an e-commerce site to focus on its users than it is for the average website. Getting people to drop by is great, but if they immediately leave it’s ultimately wasted effort.
If your site operates e-commerce, you are likely to take a slightly different approach to search engine optimisation. Many existing sites that are taken to SEO firms have little usable content. An e-commerce site has a lot of content, most of which must remain in some form in order for the business to continue to operate. The most common form of SEO client has a static site. Most e-commerce sites, however, are necessarily dynamic. An e-commerce site will experience different problems than the average site being optimised, but it will also have different advantages.
Some e-commerce sites have difficulty with SEO because it involves change. Lots of e-commerce sites get bogged down with content that is structured within a virtual labyrinth. An SEO consultant’s task in this case will be to make the navigation more crawlable without causing too much upheaval for regular site users. This can be slightly more traumatic to the site’s owners, as they worry about how users will perceive the changes.
Another area of concern to e-commerce owners when it comes to SEO is the difference between SEO and pay-per-click. Retail has long been involved in advertising for business, and on the net it’s no different. The organic nature of search engine optimisation means that it is a process that takes time. This is in sharp contrast to the results of PPC, and can be another worry for e-commerce site owners.
Optimisation for e-commerce is a delicate balance between conversions and traffic. A good SEO firm will make sure your site is just as friendly to users as it is to search engines. Sometimes the two are the same, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult about SEO and user-friendliness. Keeping your navigation clear makes it more crawlable by the search engine spiders and easier for your users. Optimising your text content and labeling your images clearly enables both search engines and humans to understand your product better.
When thinking about optimisation for your e-commerce site, finding the right company is important. Researching the experience of companies out there can help you find someone to fit your individual business. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

SEO browsers are designed to highlight features of a web page pertinent to the work of SEO. This way, it helps you browse sites the way an SEO should or possibly the way that Google would.
We have picked 3 popular browsers to evaluate, each of them having similar features.
Domaintools SEO browser
It gives us information concerning:
- Whois record (also NS server and IP server history)
- Site profile (SEO score, meta tags, Alt tags, relevancy score for the meta tags, word count and number of linked words, number of images and number of links as well as related sites)
- Alexa and Compete scores
- Search engine preview
- Registration details
- Server stats
- Similar domains
- IP
This tool gives a fair bit of information off the back of the Whois record. It is probably the best tool to use if you want to focus on server and registrar information. It is quite thin on the ground as far as pure SEO information is concerned though, but it does give you links through to other tools if you want to see a spider view for example of use the W3C validator. It does give you basic information such as meta tag stats, number of images and some stats on the body of text. One interesting offering is the “SEO Score” that it assigns to a site. The SEO Score does not use PageRank or any Off-page factors, but it does use On-domain links, Off-domain links, and No-Follow links. There is no actual formula for this score but they say:
“Our goal is to allow everyone to accomplish a 100% score. If no obvious html optimization methods exist and everything looks good we will be giving it a 100%. We will be picky about the obvious things like completing Title tags and h1 tags, webmasters should be using these. We are very hard on frames and lag of alt tags.”
The idea is to help people understand where they can improve in their site. If you have a score of 20% for example, it’s pretty clear that you’ve missed out some obvious opportunities to optimise your site. With a high score in the 90’s you can safely say that you’ve pretty much covered everything. Beyond that it’s hard to make much use of it because it doesn’t actually tell you where the missed opportunities are. They do say that the scoring algorithm is in beta, but the info on this is from prior to 2007 if you read it. Their plans for the future include this “We will fetch all pages on your site and calculate PageRank according to the Standford Whitepaper. Then display the results in a bulk layout and allow for downloading of the results.” I’m not really sure what has and has not been implemented but it is going to be hard to calculate PageRank seeing that the value depends on a damping factor that only Google really knows and that the PageRank scoring method has changed since it’s implementation some 14 years ago. I don’t really know how useful it would be anyhow.
Spiderview
- Spider view
- Meta data report
- Robots.txt
- Lists all internal links
- Status code
- Lists all external links
- Number of words
This one doesn’t give an overwhelming amount of information but it does have the advantage of actually crawling and listing all of the links in and out of your site. This is a nice touch and really helps web professionals in figuring out what a site looks like structurally speaking. Out of the 3 tools on show here, it offers the least amount of information about the site for SEO purposes. It is more a crawler tool rather than a complete SEO tool really. It would be nice to not have a long list of links but rather a better display of this information. Humans aren’t good at detecting patterns in long lists of data.
SEO Browser
It has both a basic and advanced mode, so this review is for the advanced mode. It gives information covering:
- Meta data (meta tags, alt tags)
- Text to page weight ratio
- Load time, page size
- Number of words
- Number of images
- Robots.txt
- JavaScript elements
- Frames
- Cookies
- Number of links external and internal
- IP
- Google analytics presence or something else
- Response code
- Spider view
Extra tools include the:
- w3c validity checker
- DNS info via intodns
- HTTP viewer
- Link checker
- Duplicate content check
- Quantcast clickstream reporting
- Source code view
This tool is pretty cool because everything is made available on one big page, which means that if you;re looking over a handful of sites, you can do it quickly without having to skip to another page or another tab or something. It has a lot of useful information on display and will help anyone to identify problems and things they could improve on in their site. It also have links out to a number of other very useful tools as well. Out of the 3 tools, it’s the one that covers the most important SEO statistics for me.
Conclusion
All 3 tools have very different strengths. Using only one of them would be a shame, because the other 2 have lots of offer as well. DomainsTools is perfect if you want server and Registrar info for example rather than a code perspective. SpiderView is excellent to use for it’s crawler and allows you to take a look at the site structure (albeit not in a very user friendly way) and SEOBrowser is the bees knees you want to quickly give a site an SEO health check. All of them could be improved, but then all of them are free so as they say “There is no silver spoon”.
It's becoming more and more apparent that Google totally gets it (and despite numerous significant product announcements this year)…. Microsoft is losing touch with a huge portion of their own base.
We live in a time where different groups of users want to be 'in the loop'.
Whether they're developers, system builders, IT professionals or just regular everyday users, people want to put a real face on a company more than ever, and more importantly, be able to communicate with a 'human' to answer questions …. and begin to 'trust' a significant change or new product.
Just before Twitter arrived on the scene, Google's then 'top secret' webmaster contact who made numerous appearances on message boards as 'GoogleGuy' outed himself. We know him now as Matt Cutts.
Matt now makes regular rounds of trade shows, has numerous videos all over the web explaining how Google works and is (very) closely followed by almost every SEO in the world.
Microsoft has a small army of product evangelists. They're even divided by 'region'. Can you name more than two?
Many are relatively new to the scene. Some answer e-mails and some don't.
A few I've encountered since falling in love with Windows 7 simply have no clue of who to turn to within the organization for what. This, at least, has been my experience so far this past year.
In the meantime, Microsoft is spending hundreds of millions of dollars promoting Windows 7. In networking with a few of my peers, they forgot one thing. The 'evangelists' of my generation. The guys that used to get the 'pre-release discs' back in the Windows 2000 era and before …
I didn't making any 'public noise' after contacting 6 or 7 Microsoft folks about dropping 'the old dog' a few RTMs of Windows 7 and getting no reply?! (”No” … with a reason … would have been OK).
You'd think that after ten years of belonging to just about every Microsoft program there was (on and off) including the somewhat controversial Freedom the Innovate Network, OEM System Builder program (one of the first), TechNet, MSDN, Connect, Partner etc. etc … they'd make an exception for a guy that just didn't have time to throw a party?
I basically just wanted to share a few downloads or discs with people in my circle so they could discover what I had in the Release Candidate …. (and wrote about many times here …. and elsewhere). Maybe they thought I needed a few Christmas presents ?
I decided the just buy a family pack (as a few Microsoft employees that DID communicate know). Ballmer got my $150 (Wow?!) … but probably lost a bunch of IT demos that could have turned to $$$$$$ because I decided I had spent enough time trying to find the right person in Redmond …. or wherever.
So TechCrunch is reporting tonight that Don Dodge is onboard with Google. Another familiar face to many of us and one case where I can totally see bypassing the Google hiring process to snag him quickly before someone else did.
It doesn't matter how big a company is. In fact, it may not matter how great a product is. In today's market, it's all about the buzz and trust.
Dodge, like Cutts (and many others) have that trust from the tech community.
From huge corporations to small business and new entrepreneurs, there's nobody that doesn't prefer 'a contact' or at the very least, someone they can read on the web … and trust what they're reading.
Google just set another example of their understanding of the landscape, the market and the competition.

1. Establishing Reciprocal Links
One of the best methods of optimization is to establish reciprocal links or linking to and from other websites based on mutual agreement. Some website publishers who are also looking for SEO optimization agree to reciprocal agreements or exchanging links with others publishers makes it one of the most cost effective SEO optimization technique since it's almost always free. All you have to do is get in touch with the publisher of the website to setup a reciprocal link agreement between the two. You have to be careful in choosing the types of websites you establish links with, make sure that it is also in the same scope of business you are in. Make sure that the domain name you register and do business as is as catchy and easy to remember as can be! Let your creativity run wild! Catchy domain names make for good business practice.
